Grilled chicken with pâté mini bánh mì $4.50
The mini bánh mì was a modern take on the traditional bánh mì. The traditional bánh mì is known for the use of a stronger pâté and pickled carrots and radishes, as well as a crusty baguette. The bánh mì at misschu however, has achieved a milder touch by using fresh vegetables instead of the pickles and a soft bread bun which gives the bánh mì more contrast to it's texture.
Pork and prawn rice paper spring rolls $6.50
The rice paper spring rolls were the dish I enjoyed most at misschu. The piping hot spring rolls had a wonderfully crisp outer layer and a delicate filling which was intensified by the fish sauce based dipping sauce.
Mini beef pho $5.50
The mini beef pho was slightly disappointing, as the other two dishes used a range of textures and delicate flavours to enhance them. A traditional beef pho uses a balance of the slow cooked beef broth, as well as a mixture of spices, such as cinnamon, clove, black cardamom, star anise, coriander seed, fennel seed and other aromatics, including charred ginger and onion. This process leads to an aromatic yet clear broth with multiple dimensions of flavour, but the beef pho at misschu felt like they were simply trying to overwhelm me with the flavour of the beef.
I found misschu to be a lovely and quiet place to enjoy a menu full of small bite sized items on a cold afternoon, albeit a bit pricey. I would love to come back to enjoy the laid back atmosphere and friendly service.
